How Our Whiplash Compensation Calculator Works

Our whiplash claim calculator uses the official UK Ministry of Justice fixed tariff tables, updated in May 2025 under the Whiplash Injury Amendment Regulations 2025. Unlike generic personal injury calculators, this tool is built specifically for road traffic accident whiplash claims in England and Wales.

To calculate your whiplash compensation, the calculator takes into account three factors:

Injury Duration

The length of time your symptoms lasted or are expected to last. This is the primary factor in determining your base tariff award under the Civil Liability Act 2018.

Psychological Impact

Whether you suffered recognised minor psychological injury such as travel anxiety, sleep problems, or psychological shock as a direct result of the accident.

Special Damages

Your actual financial losses including lost earnings, physiotherapy costs, prescription fees, travel to medical appointments, and vehicle hire or repair costs.

The calculator combines these three elements to produce your estimated whiplash settlement range based on the same methodology used by MedCo-accredited medical experts and SRA-regulated solicitors.

Understanding Your Whiplash Payout Calculator Results

When you use our whiplash settlement calculator, your result shows a range rather than a single figure. This is because the final compensation amount depends on the outcome of an independent medical report obtained through MedCo, the government-approved medical reporting organisation.

Your whiplash injury compensation calculator result includes two components:

The Tariff Award (Fixed by MoJ)

This is the compensation for the pain, suffering, and loss of amenity caused by your whiplash injury itself. It is fixed by the government and cannot be negotiated upward by insurers. The amount is determined solely by how long your symptoms lasted, as confirmed in your medical report.

Special Damages (Variable)

These are your actual financial losses and are calculated separately. There is no cap on special damages. Common items include: loss of earnings during recovery, private physiotherapy or osteopathy costs, prescription and medication costs, travel to hospital or clinic appointments, and vehicle repair or hire car costs while your vehicle was off the road.

💡 The average whiplash compensation payout in the UK is between £1,500 and £3,500 once special damages are included, based on injuries lasting 6 to 12 months. Use our calculator above to get your personalised estimate.

How Much Compensation for Whiplash — Common Scenarios

Here are examples of typical whiplash compensation calculations using our whiplash payout calculator methodology:

Whiplash and Anxiety

How much compensation for whiplash and anxiety? If your whiplash lasted 3–6 months and you also suffered travel anxiety or psychological shock, your base tariff increases from £565 to £595. On top of this, you can claim special damages for any physiotherapy, lost earnings, or travel costs. A typical total settlement for whiplash and anxiety lasting 3–6 months is £1,200 to £2,500.

Whiplash and Back Pain

How much compensation for whiplash and back pain? If your accident caused both neck whiplash and associated back or shoulder soft tissue injury, your claim may include additional non-whiplash injury compensation assessed separately under Judicial College Guidelines. These non-tariff injuries are not subject to the fixed tariff cap.

Whiplash with Physiotherapy

How much compensation for whiplash with physiotherapy? Physiotherapy costs are recoverable as special damages on top of your tariff award. If you attended 8 sessions at £60 each, that is £480 added to your base tariff. If your symptoms lasted 6–9 months, your total could be £965 + £480 = £1,445 before other special damages.

Passenger Whiplash Claim

Whiplash passenger compensation follows the same MoJ fixed tariff as driver claims. As a passenger, you are almost never at fault, making passenger whiplash claims straightforward. The same tariff table applies and you have the same 3-year limitation period from the date of the accident.
